Upper Mustang Adventure trip start end of the dry season thus overlaps with the Tiji Festival, a spring –renewal party. Tiji is a fascinating annual three-day festival consisting of Tibet rituals that celebrate the myth of a son who had to save the Mustang kingdom from the destruction also said to be triumph of good over evil in a ritual locals call “the chasing of the Demons” Tiji comes from the words ten che, meaning the “hope of the dharma prevailing in all world” the message Guru Rinpoche carried through this region over the thousand years. The festival is indigenous to Lo-Manthang, Upper Mustang.
“Tiji” name is abbreviations of the world “Tempa chirim” which mean “Prayer for World Peace” Tiji festival commemorate the victory of the Lord Buddha’s incarnation Dorjee Sonnu over a demon called Man Tam Ru a vicious creature feeding on human beings and causing storm and droughts. This festival takes place in the month of mid may celebrate for 3 days. Lo-Manthang Choedhe Monastery performs this ritual dance during the celebration. The harassment of Ma Tam Ru Ta (dance called “TSA Chham”) and the attempt to return the demon to Lord Buddha’s realm on the third day enacted during the performance.
Tiji festival is related to Tibetan culture are organized by the Choedhe Monastery belong to the Sakya sect of Buddhism. The Monastery is headed by a Rinpoche around 65 monks from surrounding areas of Lo-Manthang.
